February is the time to start placing your bets on the prep races leading up to the grand-daddy of them all, the Kentucky Derby in May. This year there is a brand new batch of three-year old thoroughbred racers that will really make things interesting.

Several races in January have already defined some potential horses that are legitimate contenders for the Kentucky Derby in May. But February is the best time to really start evaluating those horses that could make it to the big race. One of the first races on your radar screen should be the Grade III Sam F. Davis Stakes, which took place on Saturday, Feb. 8 at Tampa Bay Downs. Leading into this race is the Grand ll Tampa Bay Derby in early March.

The West Coast got started on Feb. 9 at Santa Anita Park for the Grade ll San Vicente Stakes, which starts the prep series that leads to the Grade l Santa Anita Derby. Nadal was the winner here by 3/4 of a length, followed by Ginobili and Fast Enough. Party Town showed promise early on, and TVG Breeders Cup Juvenile winner, Storm The Court finished fourth.

The action shifted to Louisiana on Sat, February 15 for the Grade ll Risen Star Stakes. The winner here was an impressive Modernist, and for the Grade I race, Mr. Monomoy. This series leads into the Louisiana Derby on March 21 with a $1 Million purse.

The final Saturday in February leads to Gulfstream Park in Florida for the Grade ll Fountain of Youth Stakes. The best three year olds in this race that are eventually headed to Churchill Downs, will compete for the $1 Million prize purse in the Grade l Florida Derby on March 28.

The Kentucky Derby is the first of the Triple Crown racing series and will be held on the first Saturday in May (5/3/20). The Preakness Stakes will be held two weeks later at Pimlico Race Track. Wrapping up the Triple Crown, Belmont Park will host the Belmont Stakes on the first Saturday in June.

A great way to get started on the handicapping process for the 2020 Triple Crown racing season is to take advantage of the early prep races. By betting on these races you’ll have a better idea of who the front runners will be in the Kentucky Derby.

As the Kentucky Derby 2020 prep races start up, the best way to bet on your favorite horse is with a reputable online sportsbook. There are numerous sportsbooks on the internet to choose from, but if you don’t have a trusted book, do your research before you make a deposit.

And not to leave out all the other sports betting action in the run up to the Triple Crown races, March and April are exciting as well. March Madness for college basketball is right around the corner. And don’t forget the National Basketball League starts up along with the National Basketball Association and the National Hockey League playoffs in April.
